Polyurethane Marine Components

Saltwater-resistant polyurethane bearings, rollers, fenders and custom parts for commercial marine applications.

Polyurethane marine components including bearings and rollers by Elastomers Queensland

Saltwater environments destroy metal components through corrosion, attack rubber through ozone and UV degradation, and swell nylon through water absorption. Cast polyurethane provides a practical alternative material for marine applications where all three failure modes are problems.

Elastomers Queensland manufactures polyurethane components for commercial marine operations across Queensland's extensive coastline — from the Port of Brisbane to Cairns and beyond. Our marine customers include port operators, commercial fishing operations, boat builders, and naval architecture firms.

Why Polyurethane for Marine Applications

The case for polyurethane in marine environments rests on a combination of properties that no single alternative material provides. Metal corrodes in saltwater without expensive treatment and maintenance. Rubber degrades under UV and ozone exposure, losing its elastic properties over time. Engineering plastics absorb water and lose dimensional stability, particularly nylon which can swell several percent in prolonged water contact.

Polyether-grade cast polyurethane is specifically resistant to hydrolysis — the chemical attack of water on the polymer chains that can degrade polyester-grade polyurethane. Specified correctly, polyether polyurethane components maintain their mechanical properties in continuous saltwater immersion.

Cast polyurethane also bonds well to stainless steel and aluminium substrate materials, allowing composite components that combine the structural properties of metal with the wear resistance and corrosion protection of polyurethane.

Marine Bearings and Bushes

Propeller shaft bearings, rudder bearings, outboard bracket bushes, and roller bearings on boat trailer bunks are all applications where polyurethane bearings provide a practical, corrosion-resistant alternative to metals and nylon.

We manufacture plain bore and flanged bushes to drawing in polyether polyurethane grades suited to marine service. Water-lubricated bearings — where seawater provides the lubricant — are a common marine application; polyurethane is inherently compatible with water lubrication in a way that metallic bearings are not.

Custom Marine Components

Marine engineering firms and boat builders frequently require custom components that are not available off the shelf — specialised bearing housings, custom fender profiles, hull protection strips, and keel protection pads. Our custom moulding capability covers all of these applications.
